MOSCOW, December 26 (RIA Novosti) - Electronic sensory devices could be introduced at polling stations during the 2007 parliamentary elections and the 2008 presidential elections in Russia, doing away with the old ballot system, a central election commission official said Monday.
"If the application of this equipment yields positive results, the extensive use of such devices during federal elections could be considered," Alexander Veshnyakov told a news conference in Moscow.
He said the electronic voting devices had been developed and tested in a number of Moscow's educational institutions and that a special commission had reviewed the results.
According to Veshnyakov, a proposal is being considered to certify the devices and introduce them in a limited number in one or two Russian regions during regional legislative elections in October 2006.
