May 9th – a Shared Victory

This year the world is marking the 70th anniversary of the allied victory against Nazi Germany in WWII. This shared victory is treated with particular reverence in Russia: the USSR, the predecessor of the present-day Russian Federation, lost at least 28 million people in that epic war.

For decades, on V-Day, May 9th, people and politicians in different countries have put aside their differences to pay tribute to those killed. In Russia, almost every single family can personally relate to the horrors of that war, with family and friends that either fought or perished on the battlefronts.

In this edition of Looking Forward, we are joined by Mila Rozanova, a co-producer of a new film “Battle for Sevastopol”, a joint Russian-Ukrainian effort based on the true life story of woman-sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, to reflect on the impact the war had on our people, and the lessons to be drawn from those events.
