History offers some glaring examples. England’s King Richard III was debased as a villain and Shakespeare played a big part in cementing his reputation.

One has to separate fact from fiction regarding Mozart’s death, in no small measure due to the short play by Russian dramatist Aleksander Pushkin, in which Salieri poisons Mozart.
