Russia and Ukraine are unlikely to reach a pretrial settlement in Moscow's lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over Kiev-imposed sanctions, a senior Russian Economic Development Ministry official told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia's request, filed in May 2017, focused on various restrictions that have been placed on Russian goods and services in Ukraine since 2014, in particular, bans on imports of Russian meat and dairy, spirits, fish and other goods, as well as the fact that Russian companies in Ukraine may not participate in privatization.

"We cannot disclose the results of the consultations. With regard to pretrial settlement, given Kiev's rhetoric, it is now hardly realistic," head of the ministry's trade negotiations department Maksim Medvedkov said in an interview.

Russia initiated a formal dispute in the WTO last May with a so-called request for consultations over a series of Ukrainian import curbs and bans for Russian firms to take part in Ukraine's privatization bids beginning in 2014.
