STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) – According to the Svenska dagbladet newspaper, the possibility of such a meeting was discussed earlier in December, when State Secretary to Foreign Minister Annika Soeder and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov met to discuss bilateral cooperation issues. At the time, both sides reportedly agreed that the meeting between Lavrov and Wallstroem should be held as soon as possible.
The two diplomats were just looking for for an "appropriate occasion," and the consultations would take place on neutral territory, the newspaper said, adding that Soeder had stressed the importance of contacts with Russia.
During the meeting, Soeder and Titov also discussed the issues related to the Western sanctions and Russian countermeasures, the Swedish Presidency of the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS) and the Barents/Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) in 2017, as well as Sweden's non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2017.
