ANKARA (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo in a telephone conversation, a source from the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

"Today the head of our Foreign Ministry held a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. During the talks, the two sides discussed the situation in Syria, mostly, in Aleppo. Minister Cavusoglu stressed the importance of the evacuation of civilians and emphasized that the Syrian government forces continued its offensive on Aleppo," the source told RIA Novosti.

Earlier in the day, Cavusoglu said that the Turkish Foreign Ministry was constantly in contact with Iranian and Russian colleagues and kept discussing the situation in Syria.

Over the recent months, Aleppo, a large urban militant stronghold, became a major battleground in Syria, which has been in the state of civil war since 2011. Over the past three weeks, the Syrian army and militias have freed more than 96 percent of the territory of eastern Aleppo.
