German Ambassador to Ankara Martin Erdmann was summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry following a temporary detention by the police of Turkish Parliament Deputy Speaker Ayse Nur Bahcekapili at the Cologne airport.

Bahcekapili spent about 45 minutes at the Cologne airport because the German police considered invalid her temporary identity card received in the Turkish consulate after her bag with a diplomatic passport was stolen in Cologne.

In an interview with Sputnik Turkey, Deputy of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and member of the Commission on Foreign Affairs at the Turkish Parliament, Mevlut Dudu, commented on the issue.

"I believe that this is a deliberately provoked incident. I strongly condemn the actions undertaken toward Ayse Nur Bahcekapili. By doing so, Germany has made a big mistake. Disagreement of German authorities with the Turkish leadership's initiatives does not justify misconduct in relation to the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish parliament," the politician told Sputnik.

On September 23, Dudu himself was arrested at the Frankfurt airport, when he came to Germany to attend a conference. According to the politician, he was thoroughly interrogated, taken to the police station, and finally released, but only after showing his electronic round-trip ticket.

"I condemn such unjustified attacks on our country that occur as result of the problems in relations between Germany and the Turkish government. This is an absolutely unacceptable approach," Dudu said.

Ankara Summons German Ambassador After Detention of Parliament Speaker
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, alongside with the parliament, strongly criticized German authorities over such incidents and warned about retaliatory measures.

The relations between the two countries have recently soured as Ankara is accusing Berlin of providing support to Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) militants, outlawed in Turkey, and followers of Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, suspected by Ankara of masterminding the July coup attempt.

Germany, on its part, is slamming Turkey over arrests of journalists and pro-Kurdish opposition politicians.
