"Of course, you followed the visit of de Mistura to Syria and you know of the proposals he made regarding establishment of autonomy for eastern Aleppo. These suggestions were rejected by the Syrian leadership," Haddad told a press conference.
According to the official, all previous conferences on the Syrian issue stressed the necessity of Syria remaining united, "therefore all attempts to create some autonomous region within Syria, they get rejected."
On November 21, de Mistura held talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, during which the UN special envoy put forward a proposal on the possibility of creating a self-administration in the eastern districts of Aleppo.
Over recent months, the situation in Aleppo has deteriorated. Militant-held eastern Aleppo is encircled by government forces and the fighting has affected thousands of civilians still trapped in the city.
