The European Union must take a clear stance on the accession negotiations with Turkey while the latter has a right to consult with the population about the ongoing talks at a referendum, Berat Conkar, lawmaker from the Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – He accused the European Union of delaying the accession talks, adding that the Turkish dissatisfaction with them is obvious as the country got tired of uncertainty and EU pressure.

“The European Union must clarify its position on the negotiation process with Turkey whereas we have a right to refer to the people’s opinion and on its basis decide how this process will be organized,” Conkar, who is also co-chairman of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, said.

On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the issue of Turkey joining the European Union could be put to a referendum next year following European Parliament President Martin Schulz’s threats to introduce economic sanctions against Turkey amid arrests of opposition politicians and journalists in the country.
