EU's Mogherini 'is in Constant Contact' With Lavrov on Syria

The European Union has no shortage of contacts on Syria with Russia, the sides maintain dialogue on various levels, a senior EU official said Friday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Answering whether the EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini plans to visit Russia for talks on Syria, the official told reporters:

"[Mogherini] is in constant contact with Russian Foreign Minister [Sergei Lavrov] on this issue. They held lengthy negotiations in New York, including on Syria. We have no shortage of opportunities for discussions with the Russian side, we maintain contacts at all levels."

Last month, Mogherini paid visits to Iran and Saudi Arabia to discuss recent developments in Syria.

The internal conflict in Syria has lasted for about five years.

A September ceasefire failed to hold, which resulted in intensified fighting between Syrian government forces and militants in Aleppo.
