Germany will contribute extra $67.5 millions to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) funds to support people in Africa, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Monday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — This money will be used to help people in need in the Chad Lake basin, South Sudan, Somalia and Burundi. Africa has recently seen flare-ups of old conflicts as well as eruptions of new ones, Steinmeier said. Fighting has been aggravated by climate-related natural disasters.

German Interior Ministry Accused of Treating Refugees Like 'Contagious Disease'

"Thanks to the support of the German parliament, I promised UN commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi today that 61 million euros in additional humanitarian aid will be made available for the UNHCR to address urgent crises in Africa," Steinmeier said after a meeting with Grandi.

The UN refugee agency estimates that more than 60 million people globally have been displaced. Africa’s sub-Sahara region is home to the world’s largest refugee population.
