Russia and the Western countries should look for ways to intensify cooperation to mitigate the current tensions in relations, resembling the Cold War period, Riga's mayor Nils Usakovs said Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — He added that the Baltic Forum conference brought together participants from Russia, Europe, the United States and other countries, who might suggest solutions to solidify the collaboration between Russia and Western countries to avoid conflicts.

"We live in the time that resembles the 'Cold War more and more, which is why we have to look for ways to strengthen collaboration between countries so that no conflicts would be possible," Usakovs said, opening the Baltic Forum conference in the Latvian city of Jurmala.

The members of the conference will discuss the security issues in Europe.
