Stockholm is ready to hold high-level contacts with Moscow as Sweden prepares to take up its seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC), the country's Foreign Minister Margot Wallstroem said on Wednesday.

STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) — The outlet cited a source close to the Swedish government as saying this did not mean that Stockholm wanted to restore diplomatic relations with Moscow or hold government-level meetings.

"It is only natural that prior to and during our membership of the UN Security Council, we have contacts with other members, including at the political level. As I said previously, I am ready to meet, for instance, with my Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov," Wallstrom told a Swedish newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet, in a written comment.

In June, Sweden was elected to the UN’s key decision-making body to fill a non-permanent seat for two years starting in January 2017. Russia is one of the five UNSC permanent member states.

According to Russia’s Ambassador to Sweden, Viktor Tatarintsev, relations between the two countries hit rock bottom amid the crisis in Ukraine.
