Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande discussed in phone talks on Wednesday the prospects of a political resolution of the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, the Kremlin press service said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the statement, President Putin reaffirmed that there was no alternative to the Minsk agreements as the basis for a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

"The leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, in particular, the prospects of further international support of efforts aimed at resolving the internal conflict in Ukraine through strict implementation of the Minsk accords of February 12, 2015," the Kremlin said in statement.

The leaders agreed to step up contacts at various levels dedicated to the issues of Ukrainian reconciliation, the statement added.
