May Urges Rouhani to Resolve Issue of Detained British-Iranian Charity Worker

UK Prime Minister Theresa May raised concerns over the case of dual British-Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an aid worker detained in Iran over allegedly plotting a coup, during a conversation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, calling for a speedy resolution of the issue, May’s office said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to a Downing Street press release, the two leaders spoke on the phone earlier in the day.

"The Prime Minister raised concerns about a number of consular cases involving dual nationals, including that of Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and stressed the importance of resolving these cases as we worked to strengthen our diplomatic relationship," the press release reads.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe was detained on April 3 in Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport on suspicion of working on an anti-government campaign spread through foreign media outlets.

According to Iran's state-run Mizan news agency, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of Iranian security forces, have accused the 37-year old female of plotting "a soft overthrow" of the Iranian government.
