Israel is interested in rapprochement with the neighbors in the region, but not ready to implement all the requirements stipulated in the Arab Peace Initiative as some of them cannot be accepted, Jerusalem Affairs Minister Zeev Elkin told Sputnik.
TEL AVIV (Sputnik) – Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman urged the Middle East countries to consider proposed amendments to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative. According to the Israeli politicians, the document could become the basis for the resumption of the Israel-Palestine peace negotiations if the amendments are adopted.
"This element of regional dialogue, it is positive. On the other hand, it includes details which Israel clearly cannot accept <…> This is all that relates to the section on Jerusalem and retreating to the 1967 borders," Elkin said.
The Arab Peace Initiative, also known as the Saudi Initiative, is a 10-sentence proposal for an end to the Arab–Israeli conflict that was endorsed by the Arab League in 2002. The initiative offers Israel normalization of relations with the Arab world in return for withdrawal from land occupied in 1967, the recognition of a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem and a fair solution to the issue of Palestinian refugees.
