"During the meeting the sides exchanged opinions over actual issues of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa. Special attention was paid to the issues of political settlement in Syria and Libya, as well as fight against international terrorism," the ministry said.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting multiple opposition factions and extremist groups, including Daesh, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia.
Libya has been in a state of turmoil since the 2011 Arab Spring movement, which later led to a civil war and the overthrow of the country’s leader Muammar Gaddafi by Western-supported Islamic extremists.
The instability in the country has facilitated the emergence of numerous militant groups in the state, particularly the Islamic State.
