Over 600 families in Syria affected by fighting against terrorist groups have received about five tonnes (metric tons) of Russian humanitarian aid, the mayor of the city of Karfa in the Daraa Governorate told journalists.

KARFA (Sputnik) – Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.

"Humanitarian aid in our city is distributed in accordance with a set list that includes over 600 families. Families with financial difficulties that lost one member during shelling and fighting have made it to the list," Saad Ghazali said.

In late February, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Hussein said that over 450,000 people remained trapped in besieged towns throughout Syria where humanitarian agencies could not provide them with aid.

A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire came into force across Syria on February 27. It was supported by Damascus, as well as by dozens of opposition groups on the ground. Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front), both outlawed in Russia, were not part of the deal.

The ceasefire has been generally holding, which improved the humanitarian situation in the country and increased access for aid convoys. Russia has been consistently delivering humanitarian aid to various parts of Syria.
