MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Syrian army confirmed Sunday that it had liberated the historic city of Palmyra from Daesh terrorist group with support of national aviation and Russian Aerospace Forces.
"After the liberation of Palmyra, you know that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin had conversations with [Syrian President Bashar] Assad, with [UNESCO head Irina] Bokova yesterday and with [Iranian President Hassan] Rouhani today… We know about an assessment of situation by [German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter] Steinmeier, we know the assessment of UN Secretary-General [Ban Ki-moon]. We are very satisfied with such estimates, we consider that they completely characterize the situation and we are sure that it is very important and symbolic victory on the way of further struggle against terrorism in Syria," Peskov said.
The terrorist group has since destroyed part of the historic sites, which are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
