The Syrian government delegation to the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva will be headed by Syrian UN Ambassador Bashar Jafari, the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s press service told Sputnik on Thursday.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) – In December, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution which provided for the beginning of talks between the Syrian government and opposition in January. The talks were expected to take place on January 25 in Geneva. However, UN Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura told Sputnik earlier in the day that the date of the intra-Syrian talks had not been fixed.

“The delegation for the Geneva-3 talks will be headed by Permanent Syrian Envoy to the UN Bashar Jafari,” the press service said.

The press service added that several lawyers and high-ranking officials of the Syrian Foreign Ministry would also be included in the delegation.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011. Forces loyal to President Bashar Assad have been fighting several opposition factions and numerous extremist groups.

Since the start of the conflict, Geneva has already hosted two rounds of UN-brokered talks between representatives of the Syrian authorities and the opposition. The Geneva negotiations failed to yield any significant results.
