According to Mexican President Pena Nieto, drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been captured, after breaking free from prison in July.

"Mission completed: we have him. I want to inform Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained," Nieto tweeted. In a subsequent tweet, the president thanked the Security Cabinet of the Government of the Republic "for this important achievement for the rule of law in Mexico."

According to the Associated Press, Guzman was apprehended after a standoff with Mexican marines in the Sinaloa city of Los Mochis. Five people, believed to be suspects, were killed during the raid, and one marine was wounded.

In total, six individuals were arrested.

Authorities have been hunting the drug czar ever since he escaped from a maximum-security prison seven months ago. In October, a tense shootout occurred in Durango, but El Chapo escaped.

The head of the Sinaloa Cartel, Guzman also escaped in 2001. While the cartel has been linked to thousands of killings in Mexico, El Chapo has earned a reputation as a Robin Hood-like figure for spending much of his money on community projects.
