UN Refugees Commissioner Hopes for Progress Concerning Mass Displacement
15:06 GMT 04.01.2016 (Updated: 10:54 GMT 26.10.2022) New UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi said that mass displacement, growing xenophobia, as well as funding gap between resources and humanitarian needs were "very dangerous" consequences of multiple conflicts and expressed UNHCR's readiness to search for solutions to these challenges.
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — New UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi expressed on Monday his hope for progress regarding mass displacement and growing xenophobia.
Grandi's 5-year term as UN High Commissioner for Refugees started on January 1, succeeding Antonio Guterres. His appointment by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was announced on November 11, 2015.

"I hope that — working with governments, civil society, and other partners — we will make progress in ensuring international protection and improved living conditions for millions of refugees, internally displaced and stateless people," Grandi said in a statement published on UNHCR's website.
Grandi said mass displacement, growing xenophobia, as well as funding gap between resources and humanitarian needs were "very dangerous" consequences of multiple conflicts and expressed UNHCR's readiness to search for solutions to these challenges.
Grandi’s appointment as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees comes amid a major migrant crisis in Europe, which is struggling with an inflow of refugees from conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
