MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The participants of the meeting in Vienna set for November 14 will discuss ways of settling the conflict in Syria politically and of providing necessary aid to the country, the Iraqi Foreign Minister told Sputnik Thursday.

"During the last meeting, which did not cover the issue of the regime's fate, we discussed the necessity of supporting the Syrian people and fighting Islamic State. Now we will, probably, come closer to determining what kind of help Syria needs and what political settlement could mean," Ibrahim Jaafari said.

According to Jaafari, the first Vienna meeting that took place in late October, brought "good results." The need for a  political settlement to the Syrian conflict was confirmed, while the issue of the Syrian regime's future was not discussed, having left the Syrian people to decide it by themselves, he stated.

Should We Set High Hopes on the Upcoming Syrian Talks in Vienna?
On October 30, diplomats from almost 20 countries, including Russia and the United States, as well as UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, met in the Austrian capital to discuss efforts to end the four-year war in Syria.

A nine-point plan on the settlement of the Syrian conflict, including mutual understanding on the country’s unity, the need to defeat extremist groups and help refugees, was worked out during the talks.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting a number of opposition factions and radical Islamist groups, including Islamic State and the Nusra Front.
