WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — Less than one-third of the UN goal of resettling 400,000 refugees has been met by the international community, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) senior US resettlement officer Larry Yungk told Sputnik on Monday.
"To try to meet that 400,000 number…we have pledges for 130,000 already. So we are really trying to fill 270,000 more, which is a lot," Yungk said.
In 2014, the UNHCR requested assistance from the international community for 400,000 persons of concern worldwide. The refugee agency aimed to have UN member states pledge to resettle those individuals within the next four or five years.
Yungk acknowledged that while the number of people in need of resettlement is big, "it is not insurmountable."
The United Nations cited more than 42 million persons of concern worldwide in 2014, including refugees, internally displaced persons, and others.
