UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The UN Secretariat would be guided by the Security Council on the issue of sending the peacekeepers to Donbas, the UN press service said on Tuesday after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.
“Regarding a peacekeeping operation in eastern Ukraine, the Secretary-General noted that the UN would be guided by the Security Council on this matter,” the UN said.
Ban Ki-moon stressed that a UN peacekeeping mission can only be formed with a vote in the Security Council.
Ban Ki-moon reiterated his full support toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the UN said.
On Monday, Klimkin delivered a speech at the UN Security Council, urging to deploy the peacekeeping mission in Donbas and at the Russian-Ukrainian border.
Commenting on the issue, the head of the foreign affairs committee of Russia's lower parliamentary house Alexei Pushkov reminded of Russia’s veto right in the UN Security council. He noted that Ukraine will not be able to impose a solution.
