Lavrov Invites New Greek Foreign Minister to Visit Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has invited Nikos Kotzias, the new Foreign Minister of Greece, to visit Moscow.

ATHENS, January 29 (Sputnik) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sent a telegram to his newly-appointed Greek counterpart Nikos Kotzias, inviting him to visit Moscow, a source in the Russian embassy in the Greek capital told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

"The date of the visit will be discussed on a working level and will be determined through diplomatic channels. This follows from the text of the telegram that our minister sent to his Greek counterpart," the source said.

Lavrov wished every success to the Greek government in his telegram.

Earlier this month, radical left-wing eurosceptic party Syriza won the Greek parliamentary elections, having gained 36.34 percent of votes. The party's leader Alexis Tsipras was sworn in as the new prime minister of the country on Monday.

The Russian foreign minister's invitation follows the new Greek government speaking out against a recent statement made by EU leaders calling for further anti-Russia restrictions. The government in a press release on Tuesday said that Greece did not endorse the EU statement.
