MOSCOW, January 21 (Sputnik) — There is every reason to expect that P5+1 negotiations with Iran on its nuclear program will be fruitful, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated Wednesday.
"Russian efforts within the framework of the six [P5+1 group of international mediators] contributed to the progress in resolving the situation around Iran's nuclear program. The work is continuing and despite remaining challenges there is every reason to expect the result," Lavrov said during a press conference in Moscow.
In December 2014, Lavrov said that reaching a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear program by the end of June 2015 was a realistic goal.
The P5+1 group, comprising Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Germany, joined diplomatic efforts in 2006 in an attempt to reach a deal with Tehran to ensure the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program.
Since then, the group has held several meetings with Iran, but the sides failed to reach a compromise. In November 2014, the sides agreed to continue negotiations until July 2015.
