MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) – No resolution on Libyan chemical weapons is planned for the near future, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told journalists Monday.
"No, it [the resolution] is not planned," Churkin said.
Last week, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said that Russia expects a detailed discussion of Libyan chemical arsenals during the current session of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.
Last month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia wanted to see the information concerning the state of chemical weapons in Libya. Speaking during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly on September 27, Lavrov stressed that the issue of uncontrolled Libyan chemical arsenal was extremely serious.
Libya is currently facing its worst wave of violence since the 2011 toppling of Muammar Gaddafi and the subsequent civil war. The country has seen violent clashes between numerous militias, armed with weapons seized from Gaddafi's governmental ammunition depots.
