The operation to liberate Raqqa began on June 6. Officially the city was liberated from Daesh militants on October 20.

Take a look at what has remained from Raqqa after its liberation from Daesh in Sputnik's gallery.

The Syrian city of Raqqa has been liberated from Daesh terrorists after almost one year of fighting. The city, which was once thriving and bustling before the war, now lies in complete ruins. The Russian Defense Ministry has compared Raqqa to the German city of Dresden, which had been heavily bombed by the US and British forces in February 1945.
