In Russia, June 1 marks the Day of the Northern fleet, a union of the Russian Navy, which is comprised of 38 warships and 42 submarines. Take a look at the daily life of the Northern Fleet’s sailors in Sputnik’s photo gallery.

June 1, 1933, when the northern military flotilla based in Murmansk was formed, is considered to be the birthday of the modern Northern Fleet. Construction of the first naval base in Polyarny began at the same time. On May 11, 1937, the flotilla was officially converted into the Northern Fleet as part of the Soviet Navy.
