"We have toured extensively in Spain but we are performing in Madrid for the first time," said Dmitry Bertman, the theater's arts director. "We were asked to perform Guiseppe Verdi's Falstaff."
The troupe will perform for four days in a theatre purpose-built for the festival, which seats more than 2,000 people.
"Our theater in Moscow is much smaller than this one in Madrid and we brought extra scenery for the performance," Bertman said.
The Helikon Opera Theater was established in 1990 and received the status of a State Theater in 1993. Bertman is a leading figure in the arts world, and has won the prestigious Golden Mask theatre award for the Best Musical Theater Director on four occasions.
The Verano de la Villa festival is held each summer in Spain. The festival includes all kinds of contemporary and traditional theater arts, as well as recent films.
The festival will end in late August.
