Initially, public offices had closed down in response to a report that a shooting occurred, as reported by the public information officer for the Nye County's Sheriff's Office.

"All Nye County and Town of Pahrump government offices have been closed in Pahrump as precautionary measures," the sheriff's office said. "The includes the courthouse on Basin Avenue," the office said around 10:30 a.m. local time.

About an hour later, the director said a felon had taken his kid to school, causing panic in the immediate area. Police officers have initiated a search of schools in the area.
