Secret Service Investigating Suspicious Package Near White House

A suspicious package roughly a few hundred meters from the White House spurred security personnel to adjust local pedestrian and vehicle traffic patterns as uniformed officers assess the situation, the US Secret Service said via Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses said the police presence seems larger than usual.

​On Monday, the White House experienced a brief lockdown upon US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump returning to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue from a 9/11 memorial. The Secret Service reported two individuals threw a sign and a notebook over the White House's northern fence line. One suspect was arrested by the Washington DC Police Department, the president's security team said via Twitter.

The "suspicious package has been cleared," the Secret Service announced via Twitter around 2 p.m. local time.
