MOSCOW, October 1 (RIA Novosti) – A man in southern Russia who went looking for mushrooms found 55 kilograms of marijuana in the forest but was detained by police as he tried to carry it home, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.
The man, from the southern Volgograd region said he decided to pick up the marijuana after finding it, but since there was not enough room in his car he returned home and fetched a trailer, the ministry said in a statement on its website.
The man was pulled over by police on his way home. When asked what he was carrying, he pulled away and tried to flee. He was chased, abandoned his vehicle, and ran into the forest, the police statement said.
Police recovered 12 bags of marijuana with a total weight of nearly 55 kilograms.
The suspect, who has a long record of drug related offenses, was detained several days later, police said.
