According to many believers, the temple marks Ram Janmabhoomi or the birthplace of Rama, the legendary king and one of the most important deities in Hinduism.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Uttar Pradesh to lay a silver brick in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ayodhya Ram Temple.

In the 1990s, the prime minister was among the organisers of a nationwide campaign urging to build the temple to replace the 16th century mosque at the site because it was believed to have been erected on the ruins of an ancient Hindu shrine that stood there earlier. The mosque was razed in 1992, but the legal dispute between Muslims and Hindus was only resolved by the Supreme Court last year. The court handed ownership of the land to Hindus, allowing them to build the temple.
