Blinken Goes to Beijing: US Secretary of State Visits China for First Time in Five Years

Subscribe
This weekend, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Beijing to meet with the Chinese leadership as Sino-American relations have been steadily deteriorating over the course of the last few years.
Since the de-facto tariff war unleashed against China by then-US President Donald Trump in 2018, the White House has appeared to be bent on antagonizing Beijing, repeatedly insisting that the products of Chinese tech firms are allegedly used by China's Communist Party for espionage and stoking tensions around the island of Taiwan.
Commenting on this situation, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said that the relations between China and the United States are "at their lowest point" since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Originally expected to take place earlier this year, Blinken's visit to Beijing got postponed after a wayward Chinese weather balloon accidentally strayed into US airspace, which prompted the US government to accuse China of trying to spy on American military installations.
