The final match of the English Football League Cup, also known as the Carabao Cup, of the 2021/2022 season between the two rival clubs was held on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London.
After a 0-0 draw in extra time, Liverpool defeated Chelsea 11-10 on penalties in the League Cup final on Sunday.
Both sides were frustrated by VAR ruling four goals offside, and neither side was able to break the deadlock in 120 minutes of play.
Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku's goal in extra time was not counted. The striker struck the goalpost of Caoimhin Kelleher in the 98th minute, but the chief referee, based on the side referee's signal, decided not to record the goal due to the Belgian being out of the game.
Liverpool converted all 11 of their penalties, while Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who entered the shootout as a substitute, missed his.
Liverpool's victory is their first domestic Cup title under German manager Juergen Klopp. Still, the club holds the record for the most wins in the English League Cup. The current trophy was the ninth in history for the club.
In comparison, Man City have 8 wins, Chelsea, Manchester United and Aston Villa have 5 each.
In its official Twitter, Liverpool celebrated the victory by simply writing "Nine times" with the cup emoji.
Thomas Tuchel's club is the current European champions, while Jurgen Klopp's team won the trophy two years ago. It's also worth noting that the Blues won the FIFA Club World Cup just a few weeks ago.
The EFL Cup is not considered as prestigious as the FA Cup, which has a much richer history, and even clubs that are not part of the Football League take part in the draw.
