Baku and Yerevan previously reached three ceasefire deals, but failed to abide by them, accusing each other of violating the accords. During talks between the foreign ministers of the two nations in Geneva on Friday, the sides agreed not to target civilian facilities.

A new round of hostilities began in Nagorno-Karabakh on 27 September, with Baku and Yerevan accusing each other of carrying out provocations. The heads of Russia, the US, and France urged the sides to resume talks without preconditions, however, both countries continue to report clashes along the line of contact.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted in the late 1980s, with the predominantly Armenian-populated autonomy proclaiming independence from Azerbaijan in 1991. As a result, Baku and Yerevan waged a full-scale war for the area between 1992 and 1994 that claimed the lives of around 40,000 troops and civilians from both sides.

A ceasefire was signed in 1994, and the conflict remained frozen, while the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic still continues to be an unrecognised state.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia will offer assistance to Armenia if the conflict with Azerbaijan over the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region shifts into Armenia itself, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday."As per our [1997 mutual defence] treaty, Russia will offer help to Yerevan if clashes shift directly to Armenian territory", the ministry said in a statement.

The Foreign Ministry also reiterated Russia's call for a stable ceasefire in Karabakh on the terms agreed on by the two sides during a foreign ministers' meeting in Moscow on 10 October.

Later in the day, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that all details would be discussed further.

"In this case, we are talking about the committed position of the Russian side that has been expressed in connection with Armenia's request. Everything related to specific frameworks will be discussed further", Zakharova told Russia's Rossiya 24 channel, answering a question about what possible action could be taken in case of an armed confrontation.

BAKU (Sputnik) - The Azerbaijani Defenсe Ministry on Saturday pushed back against Armenia's claims that Baku's troops had used phosphorus munitions in the breakaway republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.
