The peninsula is home to large volcanic belts, which contain more than a hundred volcanoes, of which over a dozen are active. Seismic events and tsunamis commonly occur on Kamchatka and the peninsula has on several occasions been hit by strong earthquakes.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake has occurred near the coasts of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, a local geological organisation reported. The epicentre of the earthquake was 225 kilometres from the city of Severo-Kurilsk. So far there is no information on damages or casualties.

No tsunami warning has been issued.
