WASHINGTON, May 5 (Sputnik) - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said in a statement on Tuesday that it supports the requirement to wear face masks, but opposes social distancing aboard passenger aircraft that would leave the middle seats empty.

"IATA recommends mandatory face-coverings for passengers and masks for crew as one of several actions to reduce the already low risk of contracting COVID-19 on board aircraft," IATA said. "IATA does not recommend restricting the use of the ‘middle seat’ to create social distancing while onboard aircraft."

The evidence, although limited, suggests that the risk of virus transmission on board aircraft is low even without special measures, IATA said.

In addition, IATA warned that social distancing measures would bring dramatic cost increases to air travel and fundamentally shift the economics of aviation by slashing the “load factor” to 62 percent.

However, IATA said among other measures it supports are temperature screening of passengers, airport workers and travellers; limiting movement within the aircraft cabin during flight; more frequent and deeper cabin cleaning; and simplified catering procedures that lower crew movement and interaction with passengers.

"When proven and available at scale, testing for COVID-19 or immunity passports could also be included as temporary biosecurity measures," IATA added.

NEW YORK, May 5 (Sputnik) - New York City will offer 140,000 free coronavirus (COVID-19) antibody tests to healthcare workers and first responders to learn whether they have been exposed to the infection, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

“The goal is to test 140,000 of our heroes,” de Blasio said. “ It's going to give us much more ability to let all of our heroes know what has happened in terms of exposure to this disease in their own lives.”

The initiative will be put in place by next Monday, making antibody tests available for frontline personnel across New York City hospitals, fire departments, police stations and correctional facilities, de Blasio said.

The mayor further issued a new health alert in the city after 15 children have been diagnosed with a multi-system inflammatory syndrome that is possibly related to COVID-19. Among the patients, four children tested positive for COVID-19 and six had antibodies.

De Blasio further urged parents to immediately contact health care providers if their children were experiencing persistent fever, rash, abdominal pain and vomiting - the symptoms identified with the mysterious syndrome.

“This is something that is causing concern,” de Blasio added.

On the positive note, the mayor said the number of new COVID-19 hospitalizations in New York City has dropped below 100, marking essential progress in the battle against the disease.

WASHINGTON, May 5 (Sputnik) - State-backed hackers and criminal groups pose a growing threat to national and international organizations dealing with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with efforts to infiltrate and operate undetected inside existing computer networks, according to a joint advisory by US and UK government cybersecurity agencies on Tuesday.

"APT actors frequently target organizations in order to collect bulk personal information, intellectual property and intelligence that aligns with national priorities. The pandemic has likely raised additional requirements for APT actors to gather information related to COVID-19. For example, actors may seek to obtain intelligence on national and international healthcare policy or acquire sensitive data on COVID-19 related research," the advisory from US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the UK National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) said.

APT, or advanced persistent threat, usually designates a nation-state or state-backed group that infiltrates a targeted computer network and remains undetected for a period of time while stealing data.

The advisory said COVID-19 targets include healthcare bodies, pharmaceutical companies, universities, medical research organizations and local governments, where hackers target sensitive research data and intellectual property for commercial and national benefits, the advisory said.

The advisory highlighted one hacking technique known as a "password spraying campaign," described as a brute-force attack in which the attacker tries a single and commonly used password against many accounts in an organization before moving on to try a second password. The technique allows the intruder to remain undetected by avoiding lockouts triggered by multiple attempts to use an incorrect password.

Thus, the advisory recommended organizations' staff "to change any passwords that could be reasonably guessed to one created with three random words and implement two-factor authentication to reduce the threat of compromises."

Both agencies have previously provided examples of frequently found passwords, which attackers are known to use in password spray attacks, as they continue to investigate of large-scale infiltration attempts, the advisory said.

GENEVA, May 5 (Sputnik) - The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends countries to retest for COVID-19 all cases of atypical pneumonia registered in December-November in the wake of reports about a potential early coronavirus case in France, WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told a UN briefing in Geneva on Tuesday.

On Monday, media reported that a French hospital retested samples from 24 patients who tested negative for flu and were treated in December and January and it turned out that one of them was positive for COVID-19 on December 27. Meanwhile, the first-ever coronavirus case was reported by China on December 31.

"This gives us a whole new picture on everything, and yes of course, it would be great if all countries who have unspecified cases of pneumonia in the recent months, and even in December, and in even in November, would check them against COVID-19," Lindmeier said when asked whether WHO would encourage other countries to look into old samples to find out whether there were earlier cases.

Commenting on the reports on French case, the spokesman said that it was "not surprising," as China could have coronavirus cases earlier than it was officially confirmed, while people continued travelling until it became an outbreak.

"This, of course, are interesting findings. It helps to better understand the potential virus circulation of COVID-19. It is not surprising. That is important given the earliest cases of COVID-19 had symptom onset in early December. So, it is possible that some of the infected people travelled from Wuhan to other countries at that time. It is also possible that more early cases to be found as countries retest samples," he added.

The WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on March 11. To date, over 3.5 million people have been infected with the new coronavirus worldwide and more than 250,000 have succumbed to the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University.

To be precise, the peak began on March 16 and lasted for about three weeks. Now, the situation is stabilizing, but we still have a long way to go," Rouhani said in a televised address.

According to the president, until a cure and vaccine against the coronavirus are found, the world will be facing the coronavirus pandemic for weeks and months.

So far, Iran has confirmed nearly 100,000 cases of the disease. At the same time, over 80,000 patients have been discharged, while a total of 6,340 people have died. However, Iran has been reporting a rise in a daily number of cases since May 2, when the country confirmed just 802 cases.

"By ... 30 May, we will allow hotels and tourism sector to operate, but not saunas, recreation facilities and swimming pools," Soeder said at a press conference, adding that camping sites will be reopened.

The relaxation of restrictions concerns only domestic tourism, as trips abroad are still limited by the German Foreign Ministry. These restrictions have been extended until mid-June.

However, people are now allowed to visit relatives, the rules for visiting retirement homes are simplified. In addition, on Wednesday, playgrounds will open.

Singapore medics have started giving remdesivir, an anti-viral drug originally developed to treat Ebola, to coronavirus patients as part of clinical trials, Dr Shawn Vasoo, the clinical director at the country’s National Centre for Infectious Diseases, told the CNA channel.

According to Vasoo, those patients who have agreed to take part in the clinical trials will receive either the drug or a placebo.

"Because they are as yet no proven therapies for COVID-19, it is important that robust clinical trials are conducted … We are still awaiting the publishing of the full results of the NIAID [the United States’ National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases] trial and further data on remdesivir, and also trial results (of) other agents," Vasoo told the Singaporean channel.

Initially developed by US manufacturer Gilead Sciences as an Ebola drug, remdesivir has shown a positive effect in treating SARS and MERS.

Last week, the US Food and Drug Administration issued an authorization for emergency use of remdesivir in hospitalized patients. Russia, too, is conducting clinical trials of the drug.
