It was built in 1829-1834 to designs of Italian-Russian neoclassical architect Joseph Bové in order to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812. A six-horse chariot was designed by another Russian sculptor of Italian descent, Giovanni Vitali.

Triumphal Arch of Moscow on Ploshchad Pobedy (Victory Square), the third and the oldest Moscow arch that has survived to the modern days. It was built in 1829-1834 to designs of Italian-Russian neoclassical architect Joseph Bové in order to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812. A six-horse chariot was designed by another Russian sculptor of Italian descent, Giovanni Vitali.

It consists of a pedestal reminiscent of rocket exhaust and a 12-ton statue of Gagarin made of titanium, a metal often used in spacecraft.
