WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Donald Trump Jr. attended an October 11 event hosted by the French think tank Center for Political and Foreign Affairs, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Randa Kassis, the wife of Center for Political and Foreign Affairs founder Fabien Baussart, later said in a Facebook post that she and Trump discussed at the event how the United States and Russia could reach an agreement to end the war in Syria.

Kassis, who chairs the Syrian opposition Movement of the Pluralistic Society, characterized the meeting as personal and said she believed Trump's son would convey the conversation to the president-elect.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Kassis said she noted the importance of a secular government in Syria and told Trump Jr. her concerns about radical Islamists in Syrian opposition groups.

Kassis claimed that she discussed the meeting with Russian officials, including Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

During the election campaign, Trump signaled that he would work with Russia and Syrian President Bashar Assad to defeat Daesh terrorist group.

In a phone call shortly after the November 8 US presidential election, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the current state of US-Russian relations and vowed to work on normalizing them, according to the Kremlin press service.
