The United States' policy in the Middle East could be the reason behind the defeat of the Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton at the recent presidential election, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s director of the Department for New Challenges and Threats said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian official said that Clinton’s policies had resulted in a number of problems, including the European migration crisis. He speculated that Clinton would probably continue the policy course, undermining the possibility to cooperate in anti-terrorist efforts, had she won the vote.

"Maybe the US policy in the Middle East is a factor that contributed to Clinton’s defeat at the election, we would like to think so. Because during her tenure as the US secretary of state, she had almost initiated the Greater Middle East concept, which had implied ‘democratization,’ including violently, through regime change across the region," Ilya Rogachev told RIA Novosti in an interview.

Clinton lost the electoral college in the presidential race on November 8 despite facing a controversial opponent, Republican nominee Donald Trump, with record high unfavorable ratings in national opinion polls.
