The administration of outgoing US President Barack Obama has suspended its efforts to reach a deal with the Congress to ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to The Wall Street Journal’s Friday report, Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress told the White House they would not announce the agreement in the aftermath of the November 8 presidential elections which saw Republican Party’s Donald Trump winning an unexpected victory.

The TPP agreement seeks to deregulate trade among 12 signatory nations that comprise 40 percent of the world economy. They include the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

During his election campaign, Trump has signified his opposition to the deal. Obama must either submit the deal to Congress during his remaining months in office or let the next US president decide when, or if, to send the package to Capitol Hill.
