Iran should abstain from interfering in the internal affairs of the regional states, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday after meeting foreign ministers from the Persian Gulf countries.

DUBAI (Sputnik) — Tehran has been repeatedly criticized by some Gulf states, supporting the so-called Syrian moderate opposition, for its backing of Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting multiple militant factions and extremist groups since 2011.

"Iran should play a positive role in the region, without resorting to confessional chauvinism and should not interfere in the affairs of other states," he said at a press conference in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.

He also stressed the necessity to fight against all types of terrorism worldwide.

Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir in his turn said that in order to normalize relations with Riyadh, Iran must comply with the rules of neighborhood and refrain from supporting Shia communities in Arab countries.
