France called on Britain not to delay Brexit talks on leaving the European Union.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Paris is urging London to start Brexit talks before the end of 2016 or the beginning of the next year, French government spokesman Stephane Le Foll said Wednesday.

"France wishes the current situation of uncertainty would stop pending, the Brexit talks, discussions would begin from now on until the end of the year or the beginning of the next year with the famous Article 50 of the [EU Lisbon] Treaty to be triggered," Le Foll told journalists, as quoted by the Ouest-France newspaper.

EU Commission Sets Up 'Article 50 Task Force' to Negotiate Brexit With UK
On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly said she would not trigger the Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty on leaving the bloc until early 2017.
