BAKU (Sputnik) — Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Saturday he expected "historic steps" during talks on the North–South Transport Corridor with Russian and Iranian leaders at the upcoming summit in Baku.
"Today, we signed a memorandum on acceleration of the North–South project realization with my Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani. The Azerbaijani side wants to further participate in the project's financing. The project will be discussed at the trilateral summit tomorrow. I am sure that historic steps will be taken for the realization of this project," Aliyev was quoted as saying by APA news agency.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that the upcoming talks in Baku would focus on the International North–South Transport Corridor, a project on cargo transportation that will link northern Europe and southeastern Asia.
The leaders are also expected to discuss cooperation in energy, tourism, healthcare and education.
