Forty-nine percent of combined respondents polled in France, Germany and United Kingdom say it will take at least a decade before Turkey will accede to the European Union, surveys conducted for Sputnik revealed Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Almost half of Europeans (49 per cent) think Turkey will never join the European Union or that it will take more than a decade to do so, a Sputnik.Polls survey has shown.

The poll found that this view was shared by 58 per cent of Germans, 55 per cent of French people, and 33 per cent of the British public.

The survey was conducted by a prominent French international polling and market research institute, the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP), and Populus for Sputnik News Agency and Radio.

When asked when Turkey will become a member of the EU, only 17 per cent of French people, 27 per cent of Germans, and 38 per cent of Brits said they expected the country to join the EU within the next 10 years. Twenty-nine per cent of Brits, 28 per cent of French citizens, and 15 per cent of German respondents did not answer the question.

The opinion poll in the United Kingdom was conducted by Populus, a major research company, between April 15-21 2016. In France and Germany, the survey was carried out by IFOP, France's oldest research and opinion poll institute, between April 14-18. The poll surveyed 1,045 British citizens, 989 Germans and 1,008 French respondents. The sample was chosen to reflect the population in terms of gender, age, and geographic location. The overall maximum margin of error by country is +/- 3.1 per cent, with a 95 per cent level of confidence.
