The leader of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) supports an idea proposed by the Russian delegation to establish an additional body within the OSCE to perform anti-terrorism tasks, OSCE PA President Ilkka Kanerva told Sputnik on Saturday.

VIENNA (Sputnik) Svetlana Alexandrova Russian delegate and the assembly’s special counterterrorism envoy Nikolai Kovalev raised an idea of setting up an analogue of Interpol to fight terrorists within the OSCE at the organization’s February 25-26 Winter Meeting in Vienna.

"Yes, I am supportive of this idea. We have to decide with Mr. Kovalev on how to proceed with this project," Kanerva stressed.

He specified that Kovalev’s comprehensive report contained "some good ideas, including initiatives that a lot of us can accept and relate on."

"I think this proposition is a good start for further discussions," Kanerva reiterated.

OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier disagreed with Kovalev’s proposal on Friday, saying the organization has "a set of instruments" to combat terrorism, uncontrolled migration and missing children.

OSCE is the world’s largest regional security organization made up of 57 participating and partner countries. The Parliamentary Assembly serves to connect the parliaments of OSCE member states.
