UN Security Council adopted a Presidential Statement on peacekeeping, providing the United Nations with troops for peacekeeping operations.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — UN Security Council (UNSC) adopted on Thursday a Presidential Statement on peacekeeping, which stipulates enhancing of consultations between the UN bodies and the countries, providing the United Nations with troops for peacekeeping operations.

"The Security Council recalls the issue of consultations between the Security Council, troop- and police-contributing countries and the Secretariat (triangular consultations), and the Report of its Working Group of the Whole on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations on the Enhancement of Cooperation with Troop- and Police-Contributing Countries and Other Stakeholders," the Presidential Statement said.

The statement said that the lack of effective dialogue in contacts during the triangular consultations had undermined implementation of the UN mandates in peacekeeping operations in past.

According to the statement, the UNSC expressed its readiness to develop informal consultation sessions with the states contributing to the peacekeeping operations.

At the moment the United Nations conduct 16 peacekeeping operations mostly in Africa and the Middle East. Because the United Nations do not have an army or police forces that's why UN member states are asked to provide military and police personnel for the operation.
